7 Tips for Surviving Moving With Your Kids

7 Tips for Surviving Moving with Your Kids

March 11, 2022

Making the decision to move is never easy, but when you have kids it can feel downright daunting. Not only do you have to worry about all the logistics of the move itself, but you also have to think about how your kids will handle the change. Luckily, we’ve got some tips for making moving with your kids a little bit easier. Keep reading for our best advice on everything from packing to settling in at your new home!

Tell Your Kids About the Upcoming Move

One of the most important things you can do when moving with kids is to involve them in the process as much as possible. If they’re old enough, sit down with them and explain why you’re moving and what the move will entail. Show them pictures of your new home and walk them through what their daily routine will look like in the new house. The more information they have, the less scared they’ll be of the change.

Pack Early and Pack Often

When you’re moving with kids, it’s important to start packing early. Not only will this give you more time to do it correctly, but it will also help keep your kids busy and distracted from the move. Break down packing into small tasks that your kids can help with, like sorting through their toys or clothes. You can even make a game out of it by giving them a certain number of items to pack each day.

Stick to Your Kids Schedule During the Move

Moving is hectic, there’s no doubt about it. But one of the best things you can do for your kids is to stick to your normal routine as much as possible. Try to keep mealtimes, bedtimes, and other daily activities as close to “normal” as possible. This will help provide some stability for your kids during an otherwise chaotic time.

Utilize Kid-Free Time To Get Things Done

When you’re moving with kids, it’s important to take advantage of any kid-free time you have. If your partner is home with the kids or you have a babysitter for a few hours, use that time to get as much done as possible. This will help ease some of the stress of moving and give you more time to spend with your kids when they are available. If you can on the day of the move, try to have a babysitter or family member watch your kids. That way you won’t have to worry about the kids while you are trying to figure out the move-in.

Get Help from Professionals

There’s no shame in admitting that you need help when moving with kids. In fact, we would argue that it’s essential. Hiring a professional moving company can take a huge load off of your plate and make the process a lot less stressful. Not to mention, they have the experience and expertise to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

Create a Moving Day Survival Kit

The day of the move is sure to be chaotic, so it’s important to have a survival kit packed and ready to go. This should include snacks, water, maps of the new neighborhood, sunscreen, hats, first-aid supplies and anything else you might need in case of an emergency. Label this bag “MOVING DAY SURVIVAL KIT” in big letters so that you can find it quickly if needed.

Allow Time to Adjust to the New Move

Finally, it’s important to give yourself and your kids time to adjust to the new house. After a long day of moving, it might be tempting to just plop down on the couch and relax. Instead take some time to explore your new neighborhood, meet your neighbors and unpack as much as you can. The sooner you start making your new house feel like home, the easier the transition will be for everyone involved.
